Belgic III was constructed as a freighter at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation of Camden, New Jersey's yard as the Mississippi, for the Atlantic Transport Line, and she was launched on 15th December, 1902.
In the year 1906, Mississippi was transferred within the International Mercantile Marine Company, to the Red Star Line, and was renamed Samland, carrying the flag of Belgium, on the Antwerp to New York run. When the Red Star Line's ship Nederland was scrapped, Samland took her place on the Philadelphia run.
In 1913, Belgic III reverted to Red Star Line ownership, and her identity changed once more, to Samland.
In 1930, Samland was laid up for nearly two years, and the following year, she was scrapped by Van Huyghen Fréres at Ghent.
