Anger over glitches in Belfast's Titanic Shipyard Ride

Postby Andrew Clarkson » Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:50 am

It has only been open for two months, yet one of the main attractions at Titanic Belfast appears to be plagued by gremlins.

The Shipyard Ride was plugged as one of the highlights of the £97m attraction, yet visitors are complaining that despite paying full price to get in, they’ve been left disappointed after finding the ride wasn’t operating.

Visitors take a cage lift to climb a representation of the huge Arrol gantry that was used to build the Titanic and Olympic before walking along planks of wood with exposed steel girders to get a feel for the conditions in which the workers once toiled.

They then enter a six-seater cart which descends into the dark bows of the construction to watch workers shaping girders in a furnace and hammering rivets into the hull as a voiceover describes the difficult conditions. The ride twists, turns and rotates before passing through a scale replica of a section of Titanic’s rudder.

Hello. This ride was one of the better things to see. But when you see the amount of electronics there are to control each car then I am not surprised it breaks down. It just seemed too complicated. The cars themselves move no more than 2 miles per hour but was very memorable. Ken.

We were lucky to be able to go on this ride with no hitches. Can understand their disappointment though.

The one thing I was disappointed about was not being allowed to take any photos whilst on the actual ride.

Hello Rose. Did someone tell you not to take pictures? I had a cam-corder recording while I was on it. Although thinking about it it was quite dark in there and you would have needed a very wide angle lens for there to be enough infomation in one picture to make sense. Ken.

No, Ken. I think I must have read it somewhere. Never mind, I took plenty of other pictures.
