Titanic postcard sells for £10,000

Postby Andrew Clarkson » Wed Oct 21, 2009 4:31 pm

A postcard written by a passenger on the Titanic has sold for £10,000.

Stanley May wrote: "On board Titanic, April 11th 1912. We have all had a fine trip. I am sure you would like to have been with us on this fine ship."

The card was posted from Queenstown, Ireland, where Mr May got off the doomed liner.

A luggage receipt recovered from the body of a Titanic victim sold for £59,000 at the auction in Devizes, Wilts.

The ticket belonged to Malcolm Johnson, 33 - one of 1,523 people who drowned in the disaster. Mr Johnson's pocket watch fetched £58,000.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: "The luggage ticket is believed to be the only one in existence.

"Bidding was very fierce but in the end it went to a British collector."
