Belfast launches Titanic sculpture

Postby Andrew Clarkson » Sat Oct 31, 2009 5:52 am

A model of the White Star Line's ship Titanic has been unveiled at the Abercorn Residential Complex in the Titanic Quarter.

In an interesting twist, engineers from Harland and Wolff - the company that constructed the original vessel at the beginning of the 19th century - were consulted on the matter of the building of this 13.5 metre tall bronze effigy, which has been nicknamed Kit.

The project was funded by both the Titanic Quarter and Arts & Business NI and designed by artist Tony Stallard - his largest public creation.

British-born Mr Stallard said of the work: "It references the industrial heritage of the area and can be seen as a reverie of the past, to create nostalgia of what was once heroic."

Meanwhile, Belfast has been celebrating the reopening of its Ulster Museum this week, following a two-year refurbishment of the exhibition hall's interior that cost £17 million.
